( German, 17th C)
Still life with a basket with vegetables, a ewer, a tin plate and a shell with two mice
Materials:
oil on panel
Measurements:
12.13 in. (30.80 cm.) (height) by 14.80 in. (37.60 cm.) (width)
Condition:
framed
Provenance:
formerly in the ownership of the Princes of Rohan; European private collection Prof Gerhard Bott, expert for the still lifes of the Frankfurt and Hanau School of the first half of the 17th century, thus wrote to the previous owner of the painting: The attribution of the painting to the conventions of the painters of still lifes in Frankfurt and Hanau in the first half of the 17th century is clearly visible... Recently discovered works by Peter Soreau (born in 1604 in Hanau with his twin brother Isaak), dated 1637 and 1644, display baskets, fruits and vegetables on a canted table top, all arranged in a similarly ‘baroque’ fashion, a tendency that can also be observed in Flegel’s later works... Comparing it to a painting by Isaak Soreau, dated 1645, which also displays a plethora of painted objects, two baskets and two porcelain containers and an engobe vase with flowers, I propose to date this still life around 1640....
